As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 7 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 7th place we have Claudio CANIGGIA scoring his 7th goal for Argentina vs. Italy at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

It was the semi-finals, a match played in Naples, a place where Diego MARADONA would play every Sunday with his club side Napoli. For once, the Argentine anthem was not jeered and it was a magical night.

Argentina were up against it all. A tough team, in an away ground, in a semi-final of a FIFA World Cup. Italy had taken an early lead through Salvatore SCHILLACI in the 18th minute. The first half ended 1-0 and it wasn’t until the 68th minute where Claudio CANIGGIA headed the ball in that we were level.

With the score at 1-1, the match went to extra time and RicardoGIUSTI was sent off in the 105th minute. With no more goals being scored, it was off to a penalty shootout.

Both teams were three out of three with SERRIZUELA, BURRUCHAGA and OLARTICOECHEA scoring for Argentina. For the Italians, BARESI, BAGGIO and DE AGOSTINI scored. Italy’s DONADONI would have his spot kick saved by Sergio GOYCOCHEA. Argentina’s fourth spot kick fell to Diego MARADONA and while he missed against Yugoslavia in the quarter finals, he would not miss this time as he made it 4-3 for his country. SERENA would have the last kick of the penalty shootouts and his too was saved as Argentina had qualified for their second consecutive final.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:
12. Sergio GOYCOCHEA
4. Jose BASUALDO
6. Gabriel CALDERON
7. Jorge BURRUCHAGA
8. Claudio CANIGGIA
10. Diego MARADONA
14. Ricardo GIUSTI

18. Jose SERRIZUELA
19. Oscar RUGGERI
20. Juan SIMON
