Pop superstar Taylor Swift's latest interview ended on a sour note for some fans after an interviewer jokingly suggested she should shower following her concert performance Sunday.
Swift wrapped up a brief, six-song set in humid weather conditions at The Biggest Weekend in Swansea, Wales. After this performance, she spoke with BBC Radio 1's Greg James. In what appeared to be a joke, the 32-year-old radio presenter told a sweaty Swift, "I think you need to have a shower now."
"I agree," Swift, 28, said in response. "And I'm not offended that you said that. There's a lot going on and none of it's good here."
Swifts fans, dubbed Swifties, didn't shake off James' comment, taking to social media to criticize him for his "rude" comment. One fan shared they couldn't "believe someone had the audacity to tell Taylor Swift to take a shower in her first interview in 2 years," whereas another person suggested James "implied that she smelled by saying she needed a shower."
Most fan feedback toward James was negative, but there was one person who explained that fans shouldn't be offended because "British humor is mostly sarcasm."
Swift hasn't addressed the backlash, but James revealed that he spoke with her following the interview. "[Swift] has a great sense of humor and we have known each other for ages and had a good catch up after the interview," he wrote Monday via Twitter. "It's all cool. It was hot up there. I almost said we should both go for a shower but after this reaction, I'm glad I didn't!"
The "End Game" singer has faced awkward comments from interviewers before. At the Grammy Awards in February 2015, Entertainment Tonight reporter Nancy O'Dell asked Swift on the red carpet whether she'd leave the ceremony with "lots of men" in addition to a trophy. While O'Dell likely intended for her question to come off as a joke, a seemingly stunned Swift still managed to offer up a response.
"I'm not going to walk home with any men tonight," she said at the time. "I'm going to go hang out with my friends, and then I go home to the cats. Men get me in trouble."
