The 2023 Subaru Outback station wagon has gotten a mid-generation refresh that brings its looks more in line with the all-electric Subaru Solterra SUV.
Now in its sixth generation, the Outback has been on the market since 1994, when it debuted as the Legacy Outback.
The starkest change to the design comes at the front, where cladding from the bottom of the front fascia stretches up to the headlights. The cladding around the wheel arches has also been expanded.
This design shift is most notable because it moves the Outback closer to the looks of the Solterra and brings it more in line with the styling of the rugged Outback
The LED headlights and fog lights have been redesigned, while the bumper has been refreshed to give it a more rugged look, according to the company. Wilderness.
While the refresh doesn't match up stylistically with the 2022 Subaru Forester, there are some similarities to the Forester's Wilderness version. The use of black cladding around the wheel arches and just below the headlights signal a cohesion in those areas.
All but the XT and Wilderness trim levels of the 2023 Outback come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine that's paired with an eight-speed continuously variable transmission. That duo delivers 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque.
The Onyx Edition is now offered with the 2.5-liter. It previously came only with the turbocharged engine.
For the Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, Touring XT and Wilderness variants, a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine is available with the eight-speed CVT, which puts out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.
Most trims are rated for up to an EPA-rated 33 mpg, while the XT and Wilderness are rated for up to 30 mpg.
A number of tech changes come to the cabin. The newest version of the Starlink system debuts on the car's 11.6-inch infotainment system.
It will also be the first Subaru vehicle to come with what3words (W3W), a new location technology that divides the world into 10-foot squares and communicates something about each square with a unique 3-word combination. This allows drivers a way to navigate hard-to-reach areas like trailheads and overlooks.
The refreshed Outback is expected in dealerships this fall, after the arrival of Solterra. Pricing details have yet to be announced for the 2023 model. The 2022 Subaru Outback has a starting MSRP of $27,145, which is near where the 2023 Outback is expected to land.
So far this year, the Outback is the brand's second-best seller in the lineup, just ahead of the 2022 Subaru Forester SUV but behind the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek.
